Introduction
Date checked: October 17, 2026. Platform policies can change; recheck the linked notices before buying or listing. The illustration is an original editorial summary, not a product photograph or an official platform notice.
Japan’s new Pokémon card listing restrictions require retailers to check three things together: the marketplace, the exact product and the unit offered. A rule about a carton is different from a rule about a booster box, and a deadline on one platform does not transfer to another.
For overseas card shops and wholesale buyers, the practical question is which sourcing or resale plans need another check. These announcements describe particular Japanese marketplace rules, not a Japanese law or a worldwide ban on Pokémon resale.
What LINE Yahoo announced
In its October 13 announcement, LINE Yahoo said measures developed in cooperation with The Pokémon Company took effect that day on Japan’s Yahoo! Auctions and Yahoo! Flea Market. The companies’ cooperation dates to July 2023.
The restrictions cover Pokémon carton-unit listings, empty packaging and large-scale listings of identical products during a designated period after release. Their scopes differ. Read the platform notices rather than treating the announcement as a single ban with one expiry date.
Cartons and the October 31 restriction are separate
The Yahoo! Auctions notice prohibits Pokémon listings by the carton unit, including products released in the past. The Japanese wording is “カートン単位.” It does not turn every individual booster box into a carton, and it does not limit the carton rule to newly released products or expressly to unopened cartons.
A separate restriction concerns large-scale listings of the same product after release. The currently designated item is the Pokémon Card Game MEGA expansion “30th CELEBRATION” BOX. The stated period runs through October 31, 2026, subject to change.
That date applies to this designated temporary restriction. It is not a common expiry date for carton and empty-packaging bans. The matching Yahoo! Flea Market notice gives the same distinctions. The notices do not publish a numerical bulk-listing threshold or a merchant exemption. They describe removal and possible account suspension, rather than automatic suspension for every violation.
Empty packaging: all TCGs, without cards
The separate empty-packaging notice, also dated October 13, covers empty packs, boxes and similar packaging containing no trading cards. It applies across trading card games, including Pokémon, on both Yahoo services.
The stated concern is misuse: opened products can have their contents replaced and be repackaged to appear unopened. Empty packaging can facilitate that practice. This explains the platform’s restriction; it does not establish that every secondhand sealed product has been tampered with.
Do not assume that calling an empty box a collectible changes its classification. Equally, the notice is not a declaration that all new storage accessories are banned. It does not expressly guarantee an exemption for new protective cases or sleeves; unclear items need a current platform check.
Mercari has a different product list and timeline
Mercari’s September 15 notice applies to Japan’s Mercari and Mercari Shops from September 16, 2026, at 00:00 Japan time. Its temporary restriction covers unopened “30th CELEBRATION” expansion packs, all nine “30th CELEBRATION Card Sets,” and bundles containing the prohibited products.
The nine Card Sets remain prohibited whether opened or unopened. The notice explicitly permits listings of pulled individual cards. These statements must be read together: permission for singles is not permission for every opened product.
Mercari gives no fixed end date. Continuation depends on whether a safe trading environment can be secured, taking circulation conditions into account. Yahoo’s October 31 date therefore cannot be used as a Mercari reopening date. The notice also describes removal of covered listings; it is not a promise that a particular listing will remain available until a buyer completes an order.
Identify the trading unit before comparing offers
For a purchase specification, keep the outer carton or case separate from the retail booster box inside it, and the individual expansion pack inside a box. “Card Set” is a named product format here, not a casual synonym for any assortment of cards. Pulled singles are individual cards removed from products.
Do not infer a fixed boxes-per-carton or packs-per-box count from a marketplace rule. Record the actual product, language, release and quantity offered. If a quotation just says “one box,” resolve that ambiguity before comparing its price with another offer. Changing a description does not change what the item actually is.
The distinction also affects the next customer: someone ordering a named sealed product is not ordering a handful of singles, and a singles order does not require the same retail packaging. Agree on the deliverable instead of using an ambiguous unit as a substitute for a product description.
An editorial checklist for overseas buyers

The following are our purchasing checks, not additional platform rules:
- Identify the goods. Ask for the exact product name, language, version, trading unit and itemised quantity. Keep singles and sealed-product specifications separate.
- Check both ends of the transaction. Review the sourcing marketplace’s rules and the rules of your intended sales channel. These Japanese announcements do not establish permission on another platform.
- Document the offer. Obtain an invoice or written item description and relevant packaging photographs. Ask what is included and what the photographs actually show; documentation supports traceability, not an authenticity guarantee.
- Confirm fulfilment terms. Establish availability, dispatch timing and what happens if a listing is removed or goods cannot be supplied. Do not plan a customer delivery around an unconfirmed marketplace offer.
- Agree on dispute handling. Clarify how damage, missing contents or a disputed description will be documented and addressed before paying.
Quick answers
Are all individual booster boxes prohibited on Yahoo? The carton rule does not say that. The separate identical-product restriction currently identifies the specified 30th CELEBRATION BOX. Read both rules for the actual offer.
Does everything become listable after October 31? No. That date belongs to Yahoo’s designated temporary restriction, may change and is not Mercari’s deadline.
Can an opened Card Set be treated as a pulled single? No. Mercari distinguishes the nine named Card Sets from pulled individual cards and prohibits those sets even when opened.
For a buying decision, preserve that precision: platform, product, unit and current date. Confirm the actual offer and its permitted sales route before committing stock to your next customer.
